Orora Feed Company · Bujumbura, Burundi

Quality-controlled feed, the backbone of livestock productivity

Feed is where every productive flock and herd begins. Orora rehabilitates and operates the Ex-ALCOVIT industrial feed mill to supply consistent, quality-controlled compound feed for poultry, ruminants and fish — reducing dependence on imported concentrates and giving Burundian producers a reliable national source.

Why feed comes first

In any livestock value chain, feed is the single largest driver of cost, growth and profitability. Birds and animals can only express their genetic potential when they receive balanced, consistent nutrition — and unreliable or poorly formulated feed quietly erodes the productivity of farms across the country.

Orora treats feed as the backbone of the entire platform. By restoring industrial milling at the Ex-ALCOVIT site, we aim to give producers compound feed they can trust batch after batch, so growth rates, egg production and feed conversion become predictable rather than a gamble.

What we produce

Quality-controlled compound feed formulated for the realities of Burundian production, across three core livestock segments.

Poultry feed

Compound feed for broilers and layers across each production stage, formulated to support healthy growth, strong lay performance and efficient feed conversion.

Ruminant feed

Balanced compound feed and concentrates for cattle, goats and other ruminants, designed to complement local forage and improve productivity.

Fish feed

Formulated feed for aquaculture, supporting an emerging segment as fish farming grows as a source of affordable protein in Burundi.

Reviving industrial milling at Ex-ALCOVIT

Orora operates from installed industrial assets on the Ex-ALCOVIT site, Avenue de la Verrerie, in Bujumbura's Quartier Industriel. Rehabilitating this industrial base is central to restoring a reliable national supply of quality-controlled compound feed and reducing the country's dependence on imported feed and concentrates.

Operating the mill at industrial scale lets us standardise formulation, control quality at every step and serve poultry, ruminant and fish producers from a single dependable source — turning a strategic national asset back into productive use.

From ingredient to finished feed

A transparent, controlled process built around good regional practice — so producers know exactly what goes into every bag.

  1. 1

    Ingredient sourcing

We prioritise sourcing raw materials from national producers and smallholder cooperatives — including maize, soy and other grains — alongside complementary inputs, building local demand and shortening supply chains where we can.

  2. 2

    Quality intake & control

Incoming ingredients are checked for quality and suitability before they enter production, so the feed we mill starts from sound, well-handled raw materials.

  3. 3

    Formulation

Feed is formulated for each species and production stage, balancing energy, protein and other requirements in line with good regional nutrition practice.

  4. 4

    Milling & quality assurance

Compound feed is produced under controlled conditions with quality checks designed to keep formulation consistent batch after batch.

  5. 5

    Distribution

Finished feed reaches farms through structured distribution, so producers — from our own and franchise farms to independent and smallholder operations — can count on reliable, timely supply.

Sourcing that builds the local economy

Where quality and reliability allow, Orora sources ingredients from national producers and smallholder cooperatives rather than defaulting to imports. This keeps more value inside the Burundian economy and gives local farmers a structured commercial outlet for their crops as active partners, not passive suppliers.

Linking feed production to local agriculture creates a reinforcing loop: stronger demand for domestic grain supports farmers, while a deeper local ingredient base makes our feed supply more resilient and competitive over time.

  • Structured offtake for smallholder cooperatives
  • Shorter, more resilient supply chains
  • Value retained in the local economy

Why producers choose Orora feed

Reliable feed is the foundation of a productive farm. We focus on the things that make the difference on the ground.

Consistent quality

Controlled formulation and quality assurance mean the feed you buy today performs like the feed you bought last month — so your results are predictable.

Reliable supply

Industrial-scale production and structured distribution are built to keep feed available when your animals need it, reducing the disruption of stock-outs.

Locally grounded

By sourcing from national producers and cooperatives, our feed strengthens local agriculture instead of relying solely on imports.

Productivity focused

Formulations are designed to improve growth, lay performance and feed conversion — the metrics that determine whether a farm is profitable.
